Benji is a three-year-old domestic short hair. He returned home one evening unable to use his right hind leg.

Radiographs revealed that he had fractured his femur (thigh bone) and part of his pelvis. Benji’s thigh bone fracture was comminuted which means the bone has been broken into several pieces. These fractures are associated with particularly high force trauma such as road traffic accidents and can be some of the more challenging fractures to repair. Fortunately, the pelvic fracture was of a nature that it should heal without intervention.

Surgery was performed at Meopham Veterinary Hospital by Dr Martin Hobbs and Dr Penny Barnard-Bosma. The fracture in his leg was repaired with the combination of a pin, plate and screws. Benji was then transferred to our cat ward under the care of our nursing team. He stayed in the hospital for a further two days receiving pain relief, intravenous fluids and plenty of TLC.

Benji was then discharged to his owners for strict cage rest and we a pleased to report he is making a good recovery. We will see him back in a month’s time for repeat radiographs to ensure his leg is healing well.
